Portable Candle Stand

In October 1980, we received a donation of a portable candle stand and six pictures of the old Kingsland Homestead, which existed across the Passaic River in New Barbadoes (Lyndhurst, New Jersey) The home was built on the original patent of land issued to Nathaniel Kingsland of Barbados by the Royal Governor, Philip Carteret, in 1668. The pictures were taken by J. Ward Dunsmore around 1880.

The portable candle stand and pictures were donated to the Kingsland Manor by Mrs. Jane Murray of Mendham, New Jersey. We have little information on Mrs. Murray other than what was noted on the donation card: “Jane’s grandmother, Mrs. C. Hallock Haywood, owned the home at one time. They were friends of the Kingslands. Jane spent a great deal of time there as a child and loved everything about it.” The “home” they were referring to was probably the Kingsland Homestead in Lyndhurst. If anyone has any information on Jane Murray or Mrs. C. Hallock Haywood, please email us.

The portable candle stand and the pictures are located in our Museum upstairs.

The description that was written of the portable candle stand when it was accepted by the Historic Restoration Trust was: portable candle stand; black wrought iron; 7” round stand with 4 curled feet; arms for 2 candle holders; round handle on top; 14-1/2” high including handle; conical flint holder.
