We have clocks throughout the Kingsland Manor. Some are featured on other pages. Take some time to learn about the rest.

In our Parlor, we have an Ansonia clock that belonged to the Kingsland family and was donated by Robert Steven Kingsland, the son of Robert Elwood Kingsland and Barbara Nancy Brown Kingsland. The clock case is black enameled cast iron. Ansonia displayed their cast iron clocks for the first time at the New York World’s Fair of 1853. Our clock probably dates to around 1860.

In our Hallway we have a New Haven “Banjo” clock. We are not sure when we acquired the clock, but it is about the same age as the Ansonia. The New Haven Clock Company began supplying clock movements to the Chauncey Jerome Manufacturing Company in 1853. In 1856, the Jerome firm went bankrupt and was purchased by New Haven. Our Jerome & Company clock in the Museum and this New Haven clock in the Hallway are therefore related.

Our Office clock is a Waterbury clock donated by Karl Greengrove, the son of the late Dorothy Greengrove, who was a large part of the success of our organization. The clock has a carved walnut case and strikes on the hour. Karl has continued the family generosity, and we highlight other donations from him elsewhere in the virtual artifacts tour.

The clock in our Dining Room was owned by Clara Francis Sanford’s family and was donated to us by Robert Steven Kingsland. Clara was Robert’s grandmother. The clock is a “Gingerbread” Gilbert clock. The company that manufactured this clock started in 1828 but was known as the Gilbert Clock Company for only a short time, from 1866 to 1871. Interestingly, in 1837, the company was known as Jerome, Grant, Gilbert and Company. The “Jerome” is the same Jerome of our “Seth Parker” clock and our “Banjo” clock.

The modern wall clock in the Kitchen is key wound and chimes on the hour and half hour. It was donated by Patti Maher. It has a walnut case and was manufactured by the Emperor Clock Company.
